BOSCORF provides a unique and strategic service to the UK scientific community in providing long-term storage of sediment cores collected by NERC ships and NERC-funded researchers. Cores are kept in moisture sealed containers at +4° C to ensure optimum preservation for potential secondary usage and analysis. BOSCORF operates a suite of advanced state-of-the-art equipment for non-destructive core analysis for community use. This includes a Multi-Sensor Core Logging (MSCL) system which measures gamma ray attenuation, magnetic susceptibility and compressional wave velocity. Cores can also be logged using a cyrogenic magnetometer (by arrangement with the University of Southampton School of Ocean and Earth Science). Core image scanning and colour spectral analysis are also available. A split core micro-XRF core scanner, allowing continuous downcore high resolution element profiling and x-radiography has just been acquired. BOSCORF also provides office and microscope facilities for visiting researchers. The BOSCORF Office (Room 786/24) at NOCS provides office and computing facilities for BOSCORF users. Core descriptions, cruise reports and accessory datasets may be consulted. |
