Repository Overview

The British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF) is an internationally-recognised facility providing the UK community with some of the best core logging facilities available in Europe. It provides research facilities used in all NERC Theme Science Priority Areas and contributes directly to NERC Directed and Core Programmes and high-profile international programmes.  Therefore these facilities underpin crucial UK research in all areas encompassed by the NERC mission.

BOSCORF provides an essential and strategic service to the UK science community by providing:

  • community access to a suite of state-of-the-art non-destructive core logging instruments and expertise that is unique in the UK.
  • specialised long-term core storage facilities that allow optimum core preservation for analysis and future investigations.
  • specialist training in core analysis, core logging technology and core data visualisation.
  • technological development of new research tools.
  • long-term curation of core-based data relating to its holdings and from core-based national marine programmes in accordance with NERC data management policy.
  • opportunities for enhanced research outputs by organising scientific meetings and workshops, and promoting use of advanced logging tools.
  • integration of information on the UK sediment core archive into global data networks, promoting accessibility and collaboration within the global scientific community.

State-of-the-art core logging instruments and optimum core storage facilities, provided by BOSCORF, give British scientists the tools they need to maintain the UK's high reputation in palaeoenvironmental research. This research is crucial for understanding and prediction of climate change and natural hazards.
