Seafloor sample data sources

The NOAA/NGDC Index to Marine Geological Samples
Also known as the Curators Database, this is a co-operative effort between nineteen oceanographic institutions and government agencies that maintain marine sample repositories. National Geophysical Data Centre, Boulder, USA.
The Ocean Drilling Program (ODP)
Large database with a variety of data formats. Click above to go to the main site. College Station, Texas.
EU-SEASED
This service is a joint initiative by the ECMAST-supported projects EUROCORE and EUMARSIN (European Marine Sediment Information Network). It provides a searchable online metadatabase of seabed samples from the ocean basins and European continental waters held at European institutions and industrial companies. Leidschendam, The Netherlands.
PANGAEA
An information system aimed at archiving, publishing and distributing data from global change research, with special emphasis on palaeoclimatic, marine and environmental sciences. Bremerhaven, Germany.
The LITHOTEK database
The Lithotek at GEOMAR is a collection of samples from world ocean basins, ocean margins and mid ocean ridges. Kiel, Germany.
The Lamont-Doherty Deep-Sea Sample Repository
The collection contains approximately 72,000 metres of core comprising 9,700 piston cores, 7,000 trigger weight cores and 1,500 other core types, including box, kasten and other large diameter gravity cores. Many links presenting core-related science. Palisades, New York, USA.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography
The SIO Geological Collections contain 6500 sediment cores and over 2000 dredge hauls from the world's oceans. La Jolla, California.
Oregon State University Marine Geology Repository
The marine sediment and rock collection at Oregon State University comes from all oceans. As of 1999, it contains over 11,600 metres of sediment from 4527 cores and more than 12,000 rocks from 436 dredges. Corrallis, Oregon, USA.
GEIXS
GEIXS is the European Geological Data Catalogue. Data searching is done through geographic area, key words from lexicons and free text. Orleans, France.
GSC (Atlantic) Sample Inventory Database (SID)
A Geological Survey of Canada site providing a simple searchable database of North Atlantic samples. Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.
University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography
The Marine Geological Samples Laboratory (MGSL) of the Graduate School of Oceanography, University of Rhode Island serves as the central repository fro dredge rocks, deep-sea cores and land-based geological samples collected by the Marine Geology and Geophysics Group. Narrgansett, Rhode Island, USA.
British Discovery Metadata - Marine Geology
An index of metadata for marine geological datasets held by the British Geological Survey, Nottingham, UK.

General oceanographic data sources

EUROPE

British Oceanographic Data Centre (BODC)
BODC is hosted by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory (POL) on behalf of the marine science and technology programme of NERC. In addition to its promary role as NERC's Designated Data Centre for oceanographic data, BODC is also recognised within the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC)'s International Oceanographic Data Exchange System as the UK's National Ocenaographic Data Centre. Merseyside, UK.
European Directory of Marine Environmental Data (EDMED)
A searchable directory of datasets relating to the marine environment. Compiled in collaboration with centres in 11 European countries. Merseyside, UK.
Sea-Search
The Sea-Search website has been set up to provide an effective navigation tool to data and information sources for European marine waters, to oceanographic data and information managed by European centres, with expertise and skills in oceanographic and marine data management. Leidshendam, The Netherlands.
Irish Marine Data Centre
The Marine Institute's Marine Data Centre provides a data and information management service at a national and international level. Dublin, Ireland.
MARIS Marine Information Service
A Netherlands-based company specialising in marine information databasing. Worldwide coverage with an emphasis on the oil industry in the North Sea. Leidshendam, The Netherlands.
Extended EDMED inventory for France
This directory describes marine datasets collected by 105 laboratories of the French scieitific community. The inventory covers physical, chemical and biological oceanography, marine meteorology, hydrography, marine ecology, underwater acoustics, marine geology and geophysics domains. Plouzane, France.

NORTH AMERICA

Marine Geology and Geophysics Division of the NGDC
The Marine Geology and Geophysics Division of the NOAA National Geophysical Data Centre. An extensive inventory of data, images and data products. Boulder, Colorado, USA.
Geological Survey of Canada (Atlantic)
A site with a variety of North Atlantic datasets. Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Canada.
United States Geological Survey (USGS)
This site links with seafloor sample material at InfoBank Information.
dbSEABED - An Information Processing System for the Seabed
A new kind of inofrmation structure, based on information processing including data mining and fuzzy handling of linguistic data, with complete temporal and geospatial discrimination of data. Colorado, USA.

ASIA and AUSTRALASIA

auSEABED
The dbSEABED project has created a database and GIS (Geographic Information System) for describing the offshore soils of any national or regional maritime area. The project is a joint research programme of the University of Sydney (OSI, Ocean Sciences Institute) and the Australian Oceanographic Data Centre (AODC< Royal Australian Navy). The structure is currently operational for the Australian EEZ and the US Western Continental Margin. See dbSEABED above.
Japan Oceanographic Data Centre
Holds seafloor data plus bathymentric and biological information. Tokyo, Japan.
